What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication OR Rich Site Summary) is an XML-based format for easily distributing and aggregating Web content (such as news headlines). You can decide on your favorite websites and RSS will syndicate these lists of hyperlinks, along with other information about the websites, and display the content to you on your desktop at regular intervals. Later, you can decide if you want to follow the link.
How can you use RSS technology?
RSS works when a Web site makes an XML feed, or the file containing news items and their descriptions available publicly in a common format. For example, you can go to Moreover.com and look at hundreds of RSS feeds published by the company. Once a feed is available, you can fetch the file through aggregators, programs that display, manage and check for updates on
a list of feeds.
There are a number of aggregators available on the Internet. You can download them for free or at a minimal cost. For your reference, you may want to keep the following list of aggregators handy:
Once you've downloaded the aggregator, you can add a channel of your choice and read feeds from the channel anytime you desire doing so.
Why is it useful for you?
RSS has a number of benefits for you:
- It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving summaries of the latest content. RSS aggregators can be set to check at regular intervals for updates on your favorite sites.
- You save time by not needing to visit each site individually. Content comes to you, rather than you having to go to the content. More content can be consumed in less time.
- You avoid all extraneous information on a company's web page, including the ads, menus, etc.
The number of sites offering RSS feeds is growing rapidly and includes big names like BBC, ESPN and Yahoo News.
